Motorist safety in Barcelona is the focus of a major new government campaign launched to reduce accidents among the city’s vulnerable road users.
The Generalitat of Catalonia has initiated the ‘To avoid accidents, anticipate’ programme, aiming to cut the high rate of incidents involving motorcyclists.

This initiative comes as stark statistics reveal that one in every three fatal traffic accident victims in Catalonia is a motorcyclist.
Key Strategy For Enhanced Motorist Safety
The campaign centres on the ‘Triple P’ principle: Protection, Prevention, and Prudence. Protection involves using proper equipment, while prevention focuses on anticipating risks. Prudence, meanwhile, guides every decision on the road. According to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT), these three elements are crucial for improving road safety.
Interior and Public Security Councillor Núria Parlon emphasised that motorcyclists represent “one of the most vulnerable groups on our roads.” Consequently, the campaign targets both motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers through fictionalised narratives that show the real consequences of common driving imprudences. The materials include television spots, radio segments, graphic pieces, and digital resources adapted for social media.
The first phase runs from 10 to 31 December, coinciding with increased holiday mobility. A second phase will continue throughout 2026. This timing is particularly important as accident data shows seasonal patterns, with more victims accumulating from May to August during warmer temperatures. Interestingly, motorist accidents have recently increased between September and November.
Addressing A Persistent Problem
Approximately 50 motorcyclists lose their lives on Catalan roads each year, with over 300 suffering serious injuries. Over the last decade, nearly 480 motorcyclists have died in accidents, while more than 3,300 have sustained serious injuries. The data paints a clear demographic picture: victims are predominantly men aged 45 to 54, although younger age groups show increasing numbers.
Barcelona is the demarcation with the most victims, with the Baix Llobregat area concentrating the highest number of accidents. The C-31 road is particularly affected. The most common accident types are rear-end collisions and vehicles leaving the road. Collisions with animals, while still a minority, are showing an increase.
Accidents are distributed between morning and afternoon, with Barcelona seeing a higher weight of incidents in the afternoon. Weekdays concentrate more accidents, although incidents also increase on weekends. This persistent problem requires multifaceted solutions beyond awareness campaigns.
Complementary Actions And Future Measures
Alongside the communication campaign, the SCT has implemented complementary actions. The 11th edition of the Training 3.0 programme for motorcyclists took place this year, featuring 40 sessions across Catalonia. These included urban area sessions and corporate training, engaging over 6,000 participants.
A dedicated week focused on preventing accidents on dangerous bends brought together European experts. Consequently, signage has been improved on roads with hazardous curves. Pilot tests occurred on the N-260 at Collada de Toses and the B-124 between Sant Llorenç Savall and Calders.
Furthermore, the Mossos d’Esquadra police force has reinforced surveillance with PREMOT controls and dynamic checks using unmarked police motorcycles. These measures aim to deter risky behaviours. The broader context of road safety in Barcelona includes other infrastructure improvements, such as the recent Via Augusta overhaul delivering new pedestrian zones, which contribute to safer urban environments for all.
Ultimately, improving motorist safety requires sustained effort from all road users. The government’s campaign represents a significant step toward reducing preventable accidents and fostering a culture of anticipation and respect on Barcelona’s roads.
