Spain’s campervan industry has reached a historic milestone, hitting 1 billion euros in turnover last year. Catalonia leads the market, representing 25% of all new registrations across the country.

The figure includes vehicle sales, rental services, parking facilities, spare parts and accessories, according to Aseicar. New unit purchases rose considerably, though they haven’t surpassed 2021 levels. However, record turnover stems from booming rental demand alongside a second-hand market that triples new sales.
Catalonia’s dominance remains clear. The region didn’t even notice the slight sector downturn in 2022 and 2023 caused by the pandemic. Barcelona’s Caravaning trade show, running from Saturday until 19 October at Fira de Barcelona Gran Via, will showcase this leadership once again.
Why campervans are replacing traditional caravans
Until the early 2000s, Catalans bought caravans that attached to cars like trailers. Since then, the market has shifted progressively towards motorhomes and campervans. Society has changed, explains Susana Colom, president of Catalonia’s Caravaning Merchants Guild.
People now seek freedom, flexibility and contact with nature. Motorhomes and campervans allow travel without timetables, accommodation without advance booking and the ability to improvise. The pandemic marked a turning point, pushing travellers towards open spaces and natural environments.
The customer base has diversified too. Family travellers now share the market with young adventurers, sports enthusiasts and digital nomads. These remote workers spend months travelling in their campervans whilst connecting to laptops during working hours.
Growing rental and customisation sectors
Vehicles suit every budget and preference, according to Gremcar. Motorhomes are the largest option. Campervans use commercial vans with customisable interiors based on owner preferences. Urban vans include a rising roof for extra space.
As campervan tourism becomes mainstream, new rental companies let users experience holidays without ownership commitments. Campervan conversion businesses are also booming, offering personalised van transformations.
The sector now includes around 50 dedicated parking facilities in Catalonia, overnight areas, accessory retailers both physical and online, plus installation workshops. It’s a complete ecosystem serving a rapidly growing community of mobile travellers.
