The Catalan Government will open applications next week for a new €106 million rental assistance programme targeting residents aged 36 to 64 across Catalonia. This initiative aims to support approximately 40,000 new family units who require help with housing costs.
The scheme, a result of negotiations between the Catalan Government and the Comuns group, seeks to assist individuals not at imminent risk of exclusion but still needing financial help to pay their rent. The programme represents a significant investment in housing affordability.
The maximum annual income and rental caps have increased, significantly broadening the programme’s reach. According to the Comuns group, these expanded criteria will extend coverage to 40,000 additional family units throughout Catalonia. This offers substantial relief for middle-income residents struggling with rising rental prices.
Eligibility for Rental Support
Eligibility for the rental aid requires applicants to be between 36 and 64 years old. Additionally, their maximum annual income must not exceed €36,279.32. This figure quadruples the Catalan Sufficiency Income Indicator, allowing a wider range of working individuals and families to qualify for support.
The maximum monthly rent allowed for a property to qualify for assistance varies by geographic zone. In Barcelona city and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), home to over 3.3 million residents, the cap is €1,000 per month. For the rest of Barcelona province and Girona, the limit stands at €750.
Tarragona has a cap of €700, while Lleida and Terres de l’Ebre are set at €600. These regional variations reflect the differing rental market conditions across Catalonia.
Room Rental Caps and Special Cases
For those renting a single room, different caps apply. In Barcelona and the AMB, the maximum room rent is €750. The rest of Barcelona province has a €350 limit, and Girona’s demarcation is €400. Tarragona maintains a €350 cap, and Lleida is set at €300 for room rentals.
Families classified as large, single-parent, or those with a recognised disabled member receive higher rent caps. These households can qualify for assistance with rents up to €1,100 in Barcelona and the AMB, and €900 in other areas of Catalonia. This provision acknowledges the increased housing needs of vulnerable families.
Applying for Assistance
The aid itself provides a maximum of €200 and a minimum of €50 per month, an increase from the previous minimum of €20. The exact amount received depends on the applicant’s income and the proportion of their income dedicated to rent payments. This ensures the support is tailored to individual financial circumstances.
Applications for the rental assistance programme will open next week and remain accessible until 30 April. Residents can submit their requests electronically via the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Tràmits website or in person at designated offices specified in the official call for applications. This initiative provides crucial relief for many Catalan households facing housing affordability challenges.
