Catalan President Salvador Illa has defended the partnership with the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance to strengthen climate change research. He made the announcement in London on Wednesday before participating in the ‘Nature-First Economy’ event at Saint James’s Palace. The alliance focuses specifically on wildfire prevention and forest management strategies.

President Illa met with King Charles III to discuss the collaboration, according to the Generalitat. The King founded the CBA in 2020 as a platform to accelerate the transition toward a circular bioeconomy. This partnership aims to position Catalonia at the highest international level for environmental policy.
Fire Prevention Focus
The alliance will concentrate on preventing and combating forest fires through the CBA’s Resilient Landscapes Network. This network already collaborates with the Catalan Forest Science and Technology Centre. Additionally, La Caixa Foundation became its first custodian member last June.

Work is underway to conceptualise a European centre in Cap Roig, Girona. This facility would support the transition toward resilient landscapes and circular bioeconomy in the Mediterranean context. The initiative aligns with Catalonia’s broader sustainability efforts across the region.
International Cooperation
President Illa emphasised that fighting climate change remains a key government objective. He highlighted the special focus on forest management and wildfire prevention. The collaboration represents significant international recognition for Catalonia’s environmental policies.
The Generalitat stated this partnership will enhance research capabilities and knowledge sharing. It builds upon existing environmental initiatives while addressing urgent climate challenges. Similar sustainability partnerships have shown positive results in other sectors.
Future developments include establishing the Cap Roig research centre and expanding collaborative projects. The alliance expects to announce specific research programmes in early 2025. This international cooperation marks a significant step in Mediterranean climate resilience efforts.
