Low-cost aesthetic tourism is causing a significant surge in serious medical complications across Catalonia, according to a new survey.
The Catalan Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SCCPRE) reports that complications from budget procedures abroad have tripled, placing additional strain on the region’s public health system.
Nearly 70% of surveyed professionals have treated emergency cases linked to this trend.

Consequently, more than half of these patients required hospital admissions exceeding 24 to 48 hours. Furthermore, many needed corrective surgeries within the public system, such as the removal of infected implants.
Body Contouring Procedures Pose Highest Risk
The survey identifies body contouring and abdominal procedures as the most problematic. Abdominoplasty leads the ranking, accounting for 64% of complication cases. Liposuction and buttock augmentation follow closely behind. The most frequent complications include surgical wound dehiscence (open wounds) and infection.
Turkey and Colombia are the most common destinations for this low-cost aesthetic tourism, according to the data. When corrective surgery is needed, over half of cases are resolved with one intervention. However, nearly a quarter require two or more additional surgeries, creating a long-term burden.
Anna López, Vice President of the SCCPRE, explains the root causes. She cites insufficient preoperative assessment, very short hospital stays, and inadequate or non-existent postoperative follow-up. Additionally, less strict surgical safety standards, particularly in disinfection protocols, contribute significantly to the risks.
Travel Risks Compound Surgical Dangers
The society also highlights the specific danger of long-haul flights combined with major surgery. A journey of over four hours can triple the risk of pulmonary thromboembolism and fat embolism. These are, notably, the two leading causes of death in liposuction procedures.
This public health alert comes as Catalonia experiences record population growth, potentially increasing pressure on medical services. The findings underscore a critical need for public awareness about the hidden costs and dangers of seeking cut-price cosmetic surgery abroad.
Medical professionals urge potential patients to prioritise safety and accredited facilities over cost. The full financial and health impact of treating these complications ultimately falls on Catalonia’s public health infrastructure. Therefore, choosing a qualified, local surgeon with robust follow-up care is the safest path for anyone considering aesthetic procedures.
