Catalonia road deaths have increased to 121 fatalities during the first ten months of 2025, according to the latest official figures from the Catalan Traffic Service.

The total represents six more deaths than during the same period last year, when 115 people lost their lives on the region’s roads.
Catalonia Road Deaths Show Concerning Trend
Between January and October 2025, 113 fatal accidents occurred on Catalonia’s interurban road network. Furthermore, serious injuries have also risen significantly, with 725 people suffering grave harm compared to 655 during the same timeframe in 2024. The statistics reveal a complex picture of road safety in the region.
October alone saw nine fatalities, which represents an improvement from the same month last year. However, the overall increase has prompted concern among traffic authorities. According to the official data published by El País, vulnerable road users continue to bear the brunt of the tragedy.
Men account for the majority of victims, with 95 male fatalities compared to 26 women. The gender disparity extends to serious injuries, where 75% of those gravely hurt were men. Young adults aged 25-34 represent the most affected age group, with 25 deaths recorded.
Meanwhile, the situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing road safety initiatives across the region. The increase in Catalonia road deaths comes despite broader safety improvements compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Vulnerable road users—including motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists—account for 44.6% of all fatalities. Specifically, 37 motorcyclists, 12 pedestrians and five cyclists lost their lives. The remaining victims were travelling in cars (51), lorries (9) or vans (7).
Transport authorities have consequently issued renewed appeals for caution. They’re urging vulnerable road users to be aware of their fragility while asking other drivers to show greater respect and prudence. This call for improved safety comes as recent transport incidents have highlighted broader infrastructure challenges.
Geographically, Barcelona province recorded 53 deaths—the same figure as last year—with Vallès Occidental (11), Baix Llobregat (7) and Osona and Maresme (6) being the most affected areas. The AP-7 motorway proved particularly dangerous, witnessing 13 fatalities alone.
Despite the current increase, authorities note that Catalonia road deaths have actually decreased by 22% compared to 2019, which serves as the reference year for the Traffic Service’s Road Safety Plan. The mixed results suggest that while long-term progress continues, recent trends demand renewed attention and action from all road users.
