Catalonia road deaths have seen a significant decline at the start of 2026. Official figures show a sharp drop in fatalities compared to the same period last year.
According to data released on Sunday by the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), four people died in traffic accidents across the region in January. This represents a reduction of seven fatalities compared to January 2025, which saw 11 deaths. Therefore, the figures show a marked improvement.

Moreover, the data shows an improvement against the 2019 benchmark. This reference year is used for road safety objectives. Consequently, four fewer deaths were recorded this month than in January 2019.
Catalonia road deaths: Vulnerable users remain at risk
Despite the positive overall trend, the profile of the victims highlights ongoing concerns. Vulnerable road users remain particularly at risk. Of the four fatalities recorded in January, three belonged to vulnerable groups: two were motorcyclists and one was a cyclist. The victims comprised two men and two women.
The age breakdown of the victims indicates a spread across different demographics:
- Two victims were aged between 25 and 34.
- One victim was between 35 and 44.
- One victim was in the 55 to 64 age bracket.
Serious injuries and accident timing in Catalonia
The SCT data also points to a reduction in serious injuries on Catalan roads. January saw 37 serious injuries (26 men and 11 women). This is a marked decrease from the 60 serious injuries reported during the same period in 2025.
Geographically, the fatal accidents were concentrated in two provinces. Three deaths occurred in Barcelona and one in Tarragona. Notably, the SCT highlighted that all four fatal accidents took place on weekends. This reinforces the need for vigilance during leisure travel periods. For further context on road safety data, you can review statistics from the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic. Considering the broader historical context, these figures represent a positive step for transport safety in Spain.
