The regional government will formalise the purchase from InmoCaixa, CriteriaCaixa’s property arm, on 13th November, securing affordable housing across multiple municipalities.
Catalan Government Buys 170 Social Homes Amid Rental Strikes
The properties are located in developments in Lleida, Mollet del Vallès, and Banyoles. Furthermore, several tenants in Banyoles have been participating in a rent strike organised by the Tenants’ Union for seven months. This action currently involves 68 families across Banyoles, Sentmenat, Sitges, and Palau-solità i Plegamans.

According to official documents, the strike aims to protest against abusive clauses in rental agreements. Representatives from the Tenants’ Union, including delegates from “the strikers against La Caixa,” met with President Illa last Thursday at the Palau de la Generalitat to discuss the situation.
Meanwhile, the government continues negotiating the purchase of an additional 1,107 homes. This represents the third package acquired from InmoCaixa, bringing the total number of properties obtained through this channel to 843. The regional administration’s housing strategy appears to be gaining significant momentum.
This latest acquisition forms part of the broader Plaimpuls 10,000 initiative activated by the previous government in March 2023. Consequently, the Catalan Government Buys 170 Social Homes as part of its ongoing commitment to expanding the social housing stock available to residents across the region.
The move comes amid broader discussions about housing rights in Catalonia, including recent calls from the ombudsman to prioritise residents’ wellbeing in urban planning decisions. Additionally, the regional administration continues to address various social challenges, as seen in recent international negotiations concerning minors abroad.
Therefore, the Catalan Government Buys 170 Social Homes at a critical time for housing policy. This strategic acquisition demonstrates the administration’s proactive approach to addressing the affordable housing crisis while engaging directly with tenant concerns through constructive dialogue.
