The General Union of Workers of Catalonia has clarified that payments made by self-employed workers constitute social contributions rather than taxation. These mandatory fees fund future retirement pensions and sickness benefits according to union representatives. The Ministry of Social Security intends to increase monthly contributions next year. Proposed rises range from €17 to €206 depending on individual earnings.

Regulatory Changes
The Spanish government is establishing new payment brackets for implementation between 2026 and 2028. UGT officials state this continues the model originally agreed upon in 2022. Most freelance workers in Catalonia will experience minimal financial impact from these adjustments. This is because the majority fall within the first three income brackets earning between €1,166 and €1,700 monthly.

The trade union is prioritising educational efforts regarding this distinction. They aim to clarify differences between social security payments and value-added tax. The fundamental distinction lies in the specific allocation of these funds. The Barcelona Council provides additional business support programmes for local entrepreneurs.
Social Protection Significance
These contributions provide essential protection during periods when workers cannot generate income. They cover sickness absence and form the basis for retirement pensions. This system functions as an individual safety net for autonomous workers. It differs fundamentally from general taxation that supports public services.
Last year’s commercial expansion in El Raval involved numerous freelance businesses. The social contribution system supports such entrepreneurial activity. The Generalitat offers supplementary resources for self-employed workers throughout Catalonia.
Implementation will occur through gradual phased adjustments. Most local freelance professionals will notice negligible increases. Their social protections will continue accumulating throughout this process. This represents a measure that benefits the broader workforce.
