Catalonia traffic accidents resulted in four fatalities in January 2026, a sharp decrease from 11 the previous year. However, vulnerable road users remain at high risk, according to new data.

According to data released by the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), January closed with four traffic fatalities. This represents a reduction of seven deaths compared to January 2025. Furthermore, when compared to the benchmark year of 2019, there were also four fewer deaths.

In addition, the data highlights a substantial drop in serious injuries. This January saw 37 people sustain serious injuries (26 men and 11 women). This is a marked improvement from the 60 serious injuries recorded in January 2025.
Vulnerable road users at risk in Catalonia traffic accidents
Despite the lower overall numbers, the profile of the victims points to ongoing dangers. Three of the four people killed belonged to vulnerable collectives: two were motorcyclists and one was a cyclist.
In terms of demographics, the fatalities were evenly split between men and women (two each). The age distribution varied, with two victims aged between 25 and 34, one between 35 and 44, and the fourth falling within the 55 to 64 age bracket.
Weekend concentration of Catalonia traffic accidents
The timing and location of the incidents reveal a specific pattern. All four fatal accidents occurred during weekends. Geographically, the incidents were concentrated in two provinces, with three fatalities occurring in Barcelona and one in Tarragona.
