Catalonia traffic fatalities fell dramatically in January 2026. According to data from the Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), four people lost their lives in traffic accidents on Catalan roads. This represents a significant 64% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The SCT released these figures on Sunday. Consequently, the data shows seven fewer deaths than in January 2025, when 11 fatalities occurred across 11 separate accidents.

Catalonia traffic fatalities: Positive trends against benchmarks
Furthermore, the reduction is visible when compared to 2019, the standard reference year for European road safety objectives. Indeed, there were four fewer deaths recorded this month. Meanwhile, serious injuries have also seen a substantial decline. In January 2026, 37 people suffered serious injuries (26 men and 11 women). By comparison, 60 serious injuries occurred during the same month in 2025.
Vulnerable road users remain at risk despite improvement
Despite the overall drop in Catalonia traffic fatalities, the victim profile highlights continued danger for vulnerable groups. Three of the four deceased belonged to this category, comprising two motorcyclists and one cyclist. This represents a worrying trend, particularly given a recent fatal motorcycle collision in Barcelona. However, the gender breakdown was even, with two men and two women losing their lives.
In terms of age demographics, the victims were spread across adult brackets. Specifically, two were aged between 25 and 34, one between 35 and 44, and one between 55 and 64.
Location and timing of January 2026 fatalities
The geographic distribution shows a concentration in Barcelona province, where three deaths occurred. The fourth fatality was recorded in Tarragona. Notably, the SCT data reveals a specific temporal pattern: every fatal accident this January took place on a weekend.
