Catalonia water reserves have jumped dramatically to 82% after a powerful storm swept across the region last week. This means the internal basins now hold 552 cubic hectometres, up from 478.

Key Reservoirs See Major Water Reserve Gains
Several key reservoirs saw substantial increases. The Darnius Boadella reservoir rose from 59% to 77.3% capacity.
Other notable gains include Susqueda at 98.6% and La Baells at 80.2%. However, the Ebro basin remains at 57% capacity, holding steady from last week.
So, while the storm has provided crucial relief, the situation varies across different catchment areas. Catalan president Salvador Illa visited the Els Guiamets reservoir works in Tarragona on Monday.
It also fixes long-standing leakage problems. Farmers here rely on this small reservoir.The extreme drought of 2023-2024 left reserves below 10%, preventing irrigation and causing a total loss of income.
“The government’s commitment and approach is to do the works when it rains,” Illa stated. “Not because it rains is everything resolved.
The storm’s impact shows how quickly Catalonia water reserves can change with significant weather events. However, authorities continue to stress the importance of long-term infrastructure and conservation measures to build resilience against future droughts.
