Catalan economy growth has exceeded expectations with a projected 2.9% expansion for 2025, according to the latest Barcelona Chamber of Commerce report. This represents a significant upward revision from previous forecasts and signals a robust economic recovery across multiple sectors.
Strong Foundations Behind Catalan Economy Growth
The positive outlook stems from several key factors converging simultaneously. Private consumption now leads the expansion, marking a shift from previous reliance on public spending and external sectors. Furthermore, investment continues to benefit from European funds and favourable interest rate conditions. Consequently, this balanced growth pattern suggests sustainable economic development.

Employment figures provide additional encouragement for the region’s economic prospects. The labour market shows remarkable strength with employment expected to grow 2.2% in 2025 and 2.0% in 2026. Meanwhile, unemployment should decrease to 8.5% this year and 8.3% next year. These improvements directly support household consumption and overall economic dynamism.
Construction investment has recovered to pre-pandemic levels and continues expanding. However, the sector faces challenges with housing shortages and skilled labour constraints. Approximately 60% of construction companies report difficulties finding qualified workers, which impacts their capacity to address the ongoing housing crisis.
Productive investment has clearly surpassed pre-COVID levels and consolidates as a key growth driver for the Catalan economy. Investment per worker has also advanced during 2025, which should translate into future productivity gains. The current productivity levels now match those seen before the pandemic.
Tourism shows interesting seasonal patterns despite some challenges. International tourist numbers declined slightly during summer for the first time since the pandemic. However, occupancy rates during off-peak seasons continue increasing, suggesting successful destacionalisation of tourism and potential for future growth.
The Barcelona Chamber president emphasised that talent acquisition remains the primary concern for business leaders. Addressing this challenge will be crucial for maintaining the current positive economic momentum and ensuring long-term sustainable development across all sectors of the Catalan economy.
