Catalonia’s internal basins begin autumn at 74% capacity, more than double last year’s water reserves when levels stood around 29.5%. According to the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), internal Catalan basins now hold 503 cubic hectometres of stored water, compared to approximately 200 a year ago.

Barcelonas water supply has doubled and should continue to grow as more rain is forecast

The ACA attributes this improvement to summer rainfall, which stabilised volumes, enabled efficient irrigation, and increased desalination plant output, which continued producing at high rates. During summer, reserve volumes experienced minor decreases due to typically increased demand during these months, including higher consumption, irrigation campaigns, and greater evaporation.

Yesterday’s data shows Darnius-Boadella reservoir at 58.9% (compared to 17% last year); Sau at 61.1% (19%); Susqueda at 80.3% (35%); Baells at 93.6% (41%); Llosa del Cavall at 88% (24%); Sant Ponç at 87.5% (31%); Foix at 79.2% (64%); Siurana at 14.6% (0.9%); and Riudecanyes at 37% (1.7%).

The reservoirs showing greatest improvement from last year include Llosa del Cavall with 64 additional percentage points, Sant Ponç with over 56 additional points, and Baells with more than 52 additional points.

This past week, thanks to recorded rainfall, reservoirs followed an increasing trend that has now stabilised. In this context, the ACA appeals to citizen awareness and, despite the current positive water situation, insists on continued responsible water usage.

The dramatic improvement in water reserves provides relief following last year’s severe drought conditions, though authorities maintain vigilance regarding long-term water security and sustainable consumption patterns across the region.
