Catalunya faces a major strike on Wednesday with eight trade unions organising protests across Barcelona to demand an end to what they term “genocide, colonialism, occupation and apartheid” in Palestine. The coordinated action includes varying strike formats and culminates in an evening demonstration starting at Sants Station. According to union officials, this represents one of the largest labour mobilisations in recent months concerning international conflicts.

Strike Organisation

CC.OO and UGT have structured their industrial action around three two-hour time slots to accommodate all shift workers: 10:00-12:00, 17:00-19:00, and 02:00-04:00 overnight. Additionally, both unions will hold a joint march beginning at 10:00 from their respective headquarters, concluding at the European Commission Representation office on Passeig de Gràcia. Meanwhile, the Taula Sindical coalition has opted for a full 24-hour general strike.

Broader Mobilisation

The Sindicat d’Estudiants dels Països Catalans has called a student strike across Catalunya, Balearic Islands and Valencia in solidarity with Palestine. Spokesperson Tània Ros stated the action was urgent, noting “If we don’t direct all our efforts and hopes toward fighting for a free Palestine now, there will be nothing left to fight for in the future.” Eduard Lucas of the Intersindical Alternative of Catalunya described the situation as ongoing colonialism, even within peace agreements. The Generalitat has implemented minimum service levels of 66% for public transport and 85% for emergency telephone services. Authorities indicate the strike will proceed under established protocols for essential services. Hospital emergency units and urgent utility repairs will maintain normal operations throughout the action. The convergence of labour and student movements suggests sustained attention on international human rights issues within local political discourse.
