The CCOO trade union has condemned the increase in workplace fatalities in Catalonia, reporting that 52 people lost their lives between January and July 2025 — 16 more than during the same period in 2024.

Figures from the Generalitat’s Observatori del Treball i Model Productiu also show that 120,131 workers suffered some form of injury in the first seven months of the year. CCOO described the situation as ‘unfavourable’, citing both a surge in fatal accidents during working hours — up 44 per cent — and a marked increase in so-called traumatic incidents, which have more than doubled.
The union stressed that half of the deaths recorded inside the workplace were caused by basic safety lapses, preventable with stricter compliance. Yet, according to official data, only 34.6 per cent of Catalan companies have fully completed safety risk prevention cycles, and just 5.5 per cent have done so regarding psychosocial risks.
CCOO also compared current figures with those from 2012, noting that the 56,344 accidents reported so far in 2025 represent a 24 per cent increase on that earlier baseline. The organisation called for urgent reinforcement of workplace inspections and tougher enforcement of occupational safety rules.
