Sagrera freight station demolition plans have sparked a heated debate about preserving Barcelona’s industrial heritage.

The historic building, operational between 1922 and 1990, faces destruction next year to make way for the new Sagrera intermodal station development.

The century-old freight station currently serves as ADIF offices, but its demolition has been planned since 1994 as part of the broader Sagrera redevelopment.

However, the Promoció del Transport Públic (PTP) platform argues there’s no technical, legal, or economic justification for destroying the building. Furthermore, they suggest it could be repurposed for cycling infrastructure, railway interpretation spaces, or community facilities.

Originally built to serve the Barcelona-Granollers-Girona-Portbou line, the station occupied 200,000 square meters and created significant urban separation. Consequently, this space became particularly notable when the adjacent La Perona shantytown emerged on nearby land. The station’s golden era spanned from 1964 to 1985, when it functioned as a customs point for railway goods entering or leaving via Portbou.

Spain’s entry into the European Economic Community in 1986 rendered the customs function obsolete, leading to the station’s eventual closure in 1990. Meanwhile, the broader urban transformation affecting Sant Andreu and Sant Martí districts continues to reshape neighbourhood character.

According to El Nacional’s investigation, the demolition schedule remains firm despite the building’s potential for adaptive reuse. The massive structure’s dimensions offer multiple possibilities for community-oriented functions that could serve local residents.

The impending demolition of the Sagrera freight station represents another chapter in Barcelona’s ongoing tension between modernization and heritage preservation. Therefore, the coming months will prove crucial for determining whether this industrial landmark can be saved from the wrecking ball.
