Barcelona’s Eixample district hosted a vibrant Chinese New Year parade this Saturday. Over 1,000 participants celebrated the start of the Year of the Fire Horse (4724). This colourful event marked the centrepiece of the city’s festivities. For the first time, the celebration expanded to span two full days.
Chinese New Year Barcelona Parade Route Through Eixample
The procession began at Parque de la Estación del Norte with the traditional striking of the gong. This ceremonial act officially opened the new year. From there, the colourful rúa wound its way through Avenida de Vilanova, Ribes, Nápoles, and Ausiàs Marc. It then proceeded down Paseo de Sant Joan to culminate at the iconic Arc de Triomf.

Meanwhile, the event brought together participants from over 65 Chinese federations and entities based in Catalonia. Various local Catalan associations also joined the celebration. This collaboration highlights the strong integration of the Chinese community in Barcelona, which now numbers more than 23,500 residents.
Expanding the Chinese New Year Barcelona Celebration
Marking a significant evolution, this year’s programme expanded to a two-day format. In addition to the parade, the festival included a gastronomic and cultural fair. Visitors could sample traditional Chinese cuisine and participate in family workshops.
Throughout the weekend, the schedule featured various performances showcasing traditional Chinese culture. These included folk dances and Kung Fu demonstrations.
Official Support for the Chinese New Year Barcelona Event
The celebration, now in its eleventh year in the Catalan capital, drew significant institutional support. According to Barcelona City Council, key attendees included Albert Batlle, the third deputy mayor and councillor for Ciutat Vella. Jordi Valls, fourth deputy mayor and councillor for the Eixample district, also attended. They were joined by Sara Belbeida, the commissioner for Citizen Relations and Cultural and Religious Diversity.
Meng Yuhon, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, also attended. His presence underscored the diplomatic and cultural importance of the holiday.
Therefore, the festivities are organised by the Asociación Grupo Artistas Huaxing. They receive backing from Casa Asia, the Confucius Institute, the Chinese Consulate in Barcelona, and the City Council.
