Barcelona Christmas 2025 celebrations will transform the city with a special focus on choral music traditions starting November 22nd.
Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced an extensive programme that pays tribute to Barcelona’s rich choral heritage while expanding festive lighting to record levels and restoring ornamental fountains as part of the seasonal decorations.
Barcelona Christmas 2025 Programme Highlights
The festive season officially begins with the lighting ceremony on Passeig de Gràcia on November 22nd, earlier than usual due to Barcelona’s participation in the Guadalajara International Book Fair.
Furthermore, celebrations will continue through to January 6th, offering residents what Collboni describes as a “Christmas full of light, music and magic.” The programme includes the traditional Barcelona Nadal Festival in Plaça Catalunya from December 20th-30th, plus approximately one hundred district activities, markets and fairs.
According to recent city initiatives, this year’s celebrations aim to create harmony through cultural participation.

The mayor emphasised that choral groups represent “very genuine cultural participation that generates social networks,” noting they include participants from ages 8 to 98. Consequently, the official Christmas song “Un cor que batega” (A Heart That Beats) replaces last year’s controversial carol and honours Barcelona’s choral tradition.
The city will illuminate 126 kilometres of streets this Christmas, extending lighting to neighbourhoods without commercial activity where decorations wouldn’t normally reach. Additionally, the programme includes new lighting at the Olympic Port and the restoration of over thirty ornamental fountains, which will form part of the Christmas decorations after their lengthy closure during the drought.
Plaza Sant Jaume will feature a traditional nativity scene inside Casa Gran, nearly tripling last year’s display area from 24 to 70 square metres. Meanwhile, both the City Hall and Generalitat palace facades will feature a coordinated “light intervention” starting November 22nd, offering a contemporary interpretation of Christmas iconography through digital arts.
New Year’s Eve celebrations return to Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina with an innovative show combining tradition and future elements. Barcelona musician Marc Parrot directs and composes music blending traditional instruments with innovative soundscapes, synchronized with artistic elements by Groupe F that integrate music, drones, audiovisual technology and pyrotechnics.
This enhanced Barcelona Christmas 2025 programme demonstrates the city’s commitment to cultural traditions while embracing innovation, potentially strengthening its bid to become European Christmas Capital 2026. The free outdoor New Year’s Eve event begins at 10pm with a special Magic Fountain show preceding the midnight countdown.
