Barcelona electric moped subsidies will provide €600 to residents switching from combustion engines starting March 2026.
Mayor Jaume Collboni announced the ambitious programme today, aiming to transform the city’s entire moped fleet to zero-emission vehicles within four years.

Furthermore, the city aims to replace all petrol-powered two-wheelers with electric alternatives by 2030. “Currently, Barcelona has 32,000 registered mopeds, with 25% already electric and the remainder still combustion-powered,” Collboni explained during the announcement at Ca l’Alier.
The programme particularly focuses on younger residents, who represent the majority of 49cc moped owners. Consequently, the subsidy covers between 16% and 40% of total electric moped costs. Applicants need only prove Barcelona residency and provide documentation showing their old combustion vehicle has been scrapped.
Additionally, the scheme requires purchasing a new electric moped and presenting both documents to access the €600 payment directly. The straightforward process eliminates bureaucratic hurdles that often discourage sustainable transitions.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure Across The City
Parallel to the vehicle subsidy, Barcelona will invest €3 million in battery exchange stations. These facilities will appear in public and private car parks plus petrol stations throughout the city. The council will provide €45,000 per charging centre, covering up to 60% of installation costs.
Operators must maintain these stations for at least four years to qualify for funding. This infrastructure expansion complements other Barcelona transport improvements currently underway. The initiative aims to establish 64 new battery exchange locations, addressing range anxiety concerns.
The comprehensive approach reflects Barcelona’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility. Moreover, it demonstrates how local governments can fill gaps in national programmes like Spain’s Moves plan, which excludes mopeds.
This electric transition forms part of Barcelona’s broader environmental strategy. The city continues implementing measures to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution across all transport sectors.
