Barcelona Christmas lights expansion transforms the city’s festive landscape with a record €3.8 million investment this season.

The city council has allocated 15% more funding than last year, extending decorations across an additional 16 kilometres of streets while introducing innovative sustainable lighting systems.

Major Contract Awards Reshape Barcelona Christmas Lights

Andalusian lighting giant Ximénez emerged as the big winner in the public tender, securing five major contracts worth €2.8 million.

The company, celebrating 80 years in business, will illuminate key thoroughfares including Via Laietana, Gran Via, Plaza Catalunya and Aragó. Furthermore, their new EcoGreen Lux system introduces groundbreaking sustainability features to this year’s displays.

Meanwhile, Barcelona-based Imesco secured two medium-sized contracts valued at over €300,000. These focus primarily on neighbourhood streets undergoing long-term construction works or included in municipal Neighbourhood Plans. The company has built its reputation on community-focused lighting rather than competing for the high-profile ‘author’s lights’ contracts.

Santa Coloma de Gramenet firm Nycsa won the two smallest social-focused lots totalling approximately €84,000. Their work will brighten Trinitat Vella with 60 light points and decorate the complete Ronda Sant Pere. Additionally, they’ll install 10 additional lighting points for the Raval Km.0 Foundation, demonstrating the council’s commitment to spreading festive cheer across all districts.

The lighting division strategy deliberately splits contracts into lots of varying sizes, ensuring both large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises can participate. Consequently, this approach supports local businesses while delivering comprehensive city-wide coverage. From the total €3.8 million budget, €2.3 million specifically covers production, installation, maintenance and removal of lighting across Barcelona’s 10 districts.

Sustainable Innovation and Extended Display Period

Ximénez’s patented EcoGreen Lux system represents a significant environmental advancement in festive lighting. The technology replaces traditional aluminium structures with recycled plastic and consumes less than half the energy of conventional systems. This innovation aligns with Barcelona’s broader sustainability goals while maintaining spectacular visual impact.

Residents and visitors can enjoy the Barcelona Christmas lights from November 22nd through January 6th. Display times vary throughout the season: from 5:30 PM to 1:00 AM Sunday through Thursday, extending until 2:00 AM on Fridays, Saturdays and special holidays including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and January 5th.

The expanded lighting programme reflects Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to balance tourism appeal with local community benefits. This year’s earlier switch-on date and extended coverage area aim to boost local commerce while creating magical experiences for residents. The council’s strategic approach to Christmas lighting demonstrates how major urban celebrations can simultaneously support economic development, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.
