Barcelona City Council has officially approved the executive project for a Ciutadella Park new access point via Wellington Street. This initiative is designed to create a direct pedestrian connection between the district of Ciutat Vella and the neighbourhood of Vila Olímpica.
Announced by the Government Commission on Sunday, the project involves a new promenade linking Wellington Street with Passeig de Picasso and Passeig dels Til·lers inside the park. This development is part of a broader strategy to improve the historic park and integrate it more effectively with the surrounding urban fabric. Meanwhile, this move is consistent with other major urban renovation projects the city has undertaken recently.

Ciutadella Park New Access: Integrating the ‘Green Lung’
Laia Bonet, the First Deputy Mayor, emphasised that the primary goal is to make the park more permeable to residents. She noted that the work will create a space that is “more open, walkable, and accessible.” Furthermore, it will facilitate a Zoo that is better integrated into its environment.
By opening up this new route, residents of Vila Olímpica will gain direct access to the city centre’s main “green lung.” Currently, physical barriers often separate the coastal neighbourhoods from the park’s interior. Therefore, the project’s focus on improving connectivity aligns with the positive outcomes seen from successful public transport extensions elsewhere in Barcelona.
Ciutadella Park New Access: A Hub for Science and Culture
Beyond simple connectivity, the project aims to strengthen the Carbonera-Ciutadella-Avinguda Icària axis. The council views this corridor as a vital civic, cultural, and scientific backbone linking the districts of Ciutat Vella and Sant Martí. Consequently, it effectively creates an interior coastal route that serves as an alternative to the maritime facade. In addition, this development echoes other large-scale transformations in the city, such as the ongoing expansion of Plaça de les Glòries.
The project will allow the connection of the facilities of the future Ciutadella del Coneixement with the aim of turning the park and its surroundings into a leading European node of knowledge.
This infrastructure update is closely tied to the Ciutadella del Coneixement (Citadel of Knowledge) initiative. Ultimately, it seeks to transform the park and its environs into a European hub for research, innovation, and scientific dissemination.
