The Barcelona City Council has greenlit the ambitious restoration of this cultural landmark, marking a significant step in the broader Ciutadella del Coneixement initiative.
Ciutadella Park Umbracle Restoration Timeline and Phases
The restoration will unfold in two distinct phases over the coming years. Interior works will commence during the first quarter of 2026 and continue for ten months, focusing on internal improvements and accessibility upgrades. Furthermore, the second phase targeting the building’s four exterior facades will follow throughout 2027 with an estimated five-month duration.
According to official project documents, the restoration will meticulously preserve Josep Fontserè’s original architectural vision while incorporating modern sustainability features. The comprehensive Ciutadella Park Umbracle restoration will address structural integrity, historical preservation, and public accessibility simultaneously.
Additionally, the project includes upgrading irrigation systems with micro-sprinklers and installing new energy-efficient lighting throughout the facility. These improvements will enhance both environmental sustainability and visitor experience when the space reopens as a scientific dissemination centre.
Broader Park Transformation Underway
This Ciutadella Park Umbracle restoration forms part of a larger €8.9 million park renovation programme. Half of this funding comes from European Next Generation funds, while the remainder originates from Mayor Jaume Collboni’s Plan Endreça initiative. Consequently, visitors can expect transformations across eleven of the park’s fourteen green hectares.
The restoration follows recent completion of work on the Hivernacle and Museo Martorell, demonstrating the council’s commitment to revitalising the park’s entire heritage ensemble. Meanwhile, the adjacent plaza will reopen to the public after being closed for years, creating new gathering spaces for residents and tourists alike.
