The dramatic reduction sees criminal incidents dropping from 44,430 to 38,513 between October 2024 and September 2025.
Furthermore, crime resolution rates have skyrocketed from just 4.1% to an impressive 46.7% during the same period.
Ciutat Vella Crime Strategy Delivers Major Results
Albert Batlle, Deputy Mayor for Prevention, Security, Coexistence and Internal Regime and Councillor for Ciutat Vella, announced the figures during a press conference following the district’s Local Security Board meeting. He expressed confidence that Barcelona’s historic district is “on the right track” and “bending the curve of criminal activity.” The councillor attributed this significant improvement to increased police presence from both the Guardia Urbana and Mossos d’Esquadra forces.
Coordination between the two police bodies has been crucial to the success. Consequently, one of the most notable achievements has been the halving of violent robberies across the district. Additionally, authorities have dismantled 51 drug points with 72 related arrests. Batlle emphasised that these operations have substantially improved public safety in the area.
Detailed statistics reveal that during the twelve-month period, police made 10,393 arrests in Ciutat Vella. Meanwhile, property crimes accounted for 88% of all offences, showing a 14.9% decrease. The breakdown shows 68.6% were thefts while 10.2% involved public space intimidation. Authorities have also conducted 11 arrests across 7 cannabis associations operating as drug sales points.
The ongoing coordination between police forces appears to be yielding substantial benefits for public safety. Moreover, Batlle confirmed that final arrangements are being made for an agreement with Barcelona’s provincial prosecutor’s office. This will establish a Guardia Urbana unit attached to the judicial body to provide police support in judicial police functions.
According to the councillor, this specialised unit will strengthen operational and functional collaboration in crime investigation activities. The initiative falls within the framework of the public prosecutor’s own competencies in Barcelona. Therefore, residents can expect continued improvements in security measures throughout the district.
