The Ciutat Vella police station fire at the Guardia Urbana station in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella district has caused significant damage. Consequently, police unions have issued scathing criticism regarding the state of municipal facilities.
The blaze, which broke out on Monday afternoon, was quickly extinguished by emergency services. However, it has reignited a long-standing debate over the condition of police infrastructure in the city centre.

Electrical fault causes evacuation
According to reports, the Ciutat Vella police station fire began around 16:00 at the facility located on Carrer de les Tàpies in the Raval neighbourhood. The flames originated in an electrical panel, quickly spreading to nearby office furniture and filling the building with smoke.

The Barcelona Fire Brigade responded promptly, preventing the fire from causing structural devastation. The station was evacuated while crews worked to extinguish the flames and ventilate the accumulated smoke. Police sources have confirmed that an investigation is underway, though preliminary evidence points to an overheating of the electrical network.
Fortunately, there were no serious personal injuries, though the incident has been described as visually dramatic, with smoke billowing from the building’s facade.
Union condemns ‘obsolete’ infrastructure
While the physical damage is being assessed, the political fallout has been immediate. The SIP-FEPOL police union has issued a strong statement expressing concern, arguing that the Ciutat Vella police station fire is symptomatic of a wider neglect of police facilities.
A spokesperson for the union stated that the fire “brings to light a reality that we have been denouncing for years: the facilities where the agents of the Barcelona Urban Guard work do not meet the standards required by a modern and safe police service.”
The union highlighted that officers are frequently required to work in ageing buildings with outdated infrastructure that lacks adequate safety conditions. “Barcelona cannot demand police excellence while maintaining infrastructure from the past,” the statement read.
Demands for urgent renovation
Following the incident, SIP-FEPOL has called on the Barcelona City Council to implement an urgent renovation plan. Their demands include upgrading police stations to a standard comparable with the regional Mossos d’Esquadra facilities and committing to structural investment rather than temporary fixes.
“It is not acceptable that in one of the main European capitals, local police work in facilities that put both professionals and the public service they provide at risk,” the union added.
Authorities have stated that if the electrical fault is confirmed as the cause, appropriate measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence. Therefore, the Ciutat Vella police station fire has become a catalyst for urgent infrastructure reform.
