Barcelona’s vibrant music scene will welcome a unique new venue, Club del Disco Barcelona, which plans to open its doors after summer. This innovative space will integrate a small concert hall, a record shop, and a music bar, offering a comprehensive experience for music enthusiasts.

A 360-Degree Music Experience

Jan-Erik Grothe and Paula Comberti, who have championed the Club del Disco record label since 2005, are the driving forces behind this ambitious project. They explain that the venture aims to create a 360-degree music experience. “It is very difficult, currently, to attract clientele to an independent label,” Jan-Erik Grothe stated. He added, “The conclusion we have reached is that a 360-degree project is needed, because where more physical material is sold is at concerts.” The venue will occupy a 300-square-metre space, previously home to a Tribal Area shop, with renovation works commencing in May.

Paula Comberti highlighted the inspiration for one of the venue’s key features. “The concept of the listening bar comes from Japan,” she explained. “A bar where the customer hears the record they request.” This element promises an intimate and personalised musical journey for visitors. The record shop will not exclusively sell the label’s releases, and the concert hall will host artists beyond their roster, fostering a diverse musical offering.

Bridging Buenos Aires and Europe

Club del Disco Barcelona aims to serve as a vital bridge between Buenos Aires and Europe, with Barcelona as the central hub. A significant portion of the label’s artists are Argentine, including acclaimed musicians such as Emilio Solla, Esteban Sehinkman, Pipi Piazzolla, and Diego Schissi. The venue will provide a platform for these high-quality, yet lesser-known, Argentine artists to perform across Europe. Additionally, the label has incorporated Catalan artists, including the Barcelona Clarinet Players and the Endless Trio.

Furthermore, the project involves editing live concerts recorded in Buenos Aires from the Melero archive, featuring legends like Sarah Vaughan and Stan Getz. This initiative underscores the venue’s commitment to showcasing a rich tapestry of musical heritage. Club del Disco will also function as a promoter, with one of its five team members dedicated to facilitating this expansion through concerts. “That people come to enjoy music, that they soak up music,” Comberti urged.

Ambitious Global Expansion

The vision for Club del Disco extends beyond Barcelona. The founders plan to establish Club del Disco venues in other cities using a franchise model. Locations already exist in Buenos Aires and Shanghai, though these currently operate without concert halls. Barcelona’s new multi-purpose venue represents a significant step in this global expansion, solidifying its role as a key cultural and musical gateway.
