The Cobla Sant Jordi – Ciutat de Barcelona will honour composer Juli Garreta with four concerts across Catalonia, marking both the 150th anniversary of his birth and the centenary of his death. The first performance occurs this Saturday, 18 October, at 6pm in Girona’s Auditori chamber hall. Under musical director Miquel Massana, the ensemble will perform emblematic works including La pubilla and Griselda alongside lesser-known pieces by the Sant Feliu de Guíxols-born musician.

The Concert Programme
This weekend’s Girona concert features Garreta’s complete sardanas alongside dedicated compositions like A en Pau Casals. The cobla’s next performance is scheduled for 10 November at Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana. Tarragona and Lleida concerts will follow throughout 2026, according to the ensemble’s artistic planning. The organisation holds Barcelona’s official cobla title since 1997, awarded by the city council.

Founded in Barcelona during 1983, the ensemble maintains an active international touring schedule. Recent performances include Germany’s prestigious Elbphilharmonie Hamburg under new director Massana.
Cultural Significance
Garreta’s centenary celebrations highlight Catalonia’s enduring musical traditions. The cobla’s four-concert series represents one of the region’s most comprehensive tributes to the sardana composer. This programming aligns with broader cultural initiatives across Catalan institutions. Massana’s leadership signals a new artistic phase for the ensemble following their Hamburg debut.
The cobla’s anniversary programming continues through 2026, with exact Tarragona and Lleida dates pending confirmation. This extended tribute ensures Garreta’s musical legacy reaches audiences across all four Catalan provinces. The ensemble’s sustained international presence reinforces traditional Catalan music’s global relevance.
