The Spanish National Police have successfully dismantled an international cocaine smuggling ring. This operation thwarted an attempt to smuggle 1.5 tonnes of the drug from Brazil to Catalonia. The police raid culminated at a warehouse in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona. There, officers discovered narcotics concealed within marble sanitary ware.

The investigation was a joint effort involving the Spanish Tax Agency’s Customs Surveillance and the Federal Police of Brazil. It began in November. Authorities tracked the organisation’s complex logistics. Consequently, they revealed a sophisticated importation method that utilised legitimate businesses to evade detection.

Cocaine smuggling ring hid in plain sight

Unlike many criminal groups that establish shell companies, this cocaine smuggling ring purchased existing, reputable firms with years of trading history. By operating under the guise of established businesses, they aimed to bypass the scrutiny typically applied to new import-export entities.

According to police sources, the group employed rigorous security measures. Before attempting to move the narcotics, they conducted ‘dry runs’. These involved shipping five containers filled with bricks from Brazil to test whether law enforcement was monitoring their logistics chain.

The marble route used by the cocaine smuggling ring

Once the route was deemed secure, the gang began shipping cargo by air from South America to major Spanish hubs. These included Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. To mask the illicit cargo during customs checks, they liberally applied perfumes and air fresheners to the shipments.

The most recent attempt involved importing 1,500 kilograms of cocaine disguised as construction materials. However, Brazilian authorities intercepted the bulk of the shipment. This comprised 1,200 kilograms hidden inside marble slabs before it could leave Belo Horizonte airport.

The remaining 250 kilograms were allowed to proceed to Madrid. They were concealed within marble countertops and toilets. From the capital, the cargo was transported by road to a rented industrial warehouse in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Arrests and seizures following the cocaine smuggling ring raid

Spanish officers monitored the delivery to the Catalan warehouse. Upon obtaining judicial authorisation, police raided the facility. This occurred just as the recipients were attempting to extract the drugs from the marble fixtures.

Authorities recovered 250 kilograms of cocaine distributed across 221 packages. They also seized a van, a lorry, four mobile phones, and nearly €5,000 in cash. Evidence found at the scene suggested this was not the first shipment processed at the facility.

Two Brazilian nationals, aged between 35 and 45 and residents of the Netherlands, were arrested at the scene. They have since been remanded in custody. A third individual, a Spanish national and administrator of the construction company used for the import, was arrested and subsequently released pending further enquiries.

The investigation remains active. Therefore, police have issued an arrest warrant for a further suspect currently located in Portugal.
