Despite a recent fall in crime statistics, Barcelona’s mayor Jaume Collboni has announced a sweeping plan to bolster security with 1,000 new surveillance cameras across the city.

In an interview with El Periódico, Collboni acknowledged progress in reducing crime but stressed that more needed to be done to consolidate the trend. His administration aims to strengthen coordination between police forces, expand the number of courts dedicated to repeat offenders, and step up monitoring in the most problematic districts.

The proposed camera network would serve as a preventative measure, intended to deter offences and reassure residents. Collboni framed the initiative as part of a broader push to make Barcelona feel safer for locals and visitors alike, while critics are expected to raise concerns about privacy and over-surveillance.
