The telecommunications tower dominates the skyline from the Serra de Collserola mountain range. Observers noted it moving from side to side under the gale’s force. Importantly, officials stated the tower’s vertical integrity was never compromised. The structure is engineered to withstand such conditions.

Collserola Tower windstorm: Record-breaking gusts
Meteorological authorities described the storm as “exceptional.” It registered historic wind speeds in the metropolitan area. The Port of Barcelona recorded gusts of 105 km/h. This is the highest figure ever documented since that specific weather station began operations.
Sarai Sarroca, Director of the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat), highlighted the event’s significance. She noted the episode produced “very significant” readings throughout Catalan territory. Furthermore, the highest wind speed was recorded at Puig Sesolles, a peak in the Montseny range. There, gusts reached a fierce 166 km/h.

Across the region, emergency services dealt with the storm’s aftermath. It toppled trees, overturned refuse containers, and collapsed several walls. The wind’s intensity made Thursday particularly difficult. Therefore, it resulted in over 1,000 emergency calls.
Looking ahead, Meteocat has issued a forecast for a new wind episode. It is expected to arrive in the early hours of Saturday. This fresh bout of bad weather should last throughout the day with a danger rating of 4 out of 6. However, meteorologists predict it will be less intense than Thursday’s record-setting storm.
