Specialised wild boar capture companies are seeking involvement in the Catalan Government’s intensive operation to control wild boar populations in Collserola Natural Park. These firms, previously successful in reducing incidents in Barcelona, claim their methods are more effective for containing African Swine Fever (ASF).

Enric Ullar, from the company Estrateko, stated that his firm offered its services to the Catalan Government. However, they received no response. Estrateko, along with other local companies like Astrovet, previously held contracts with Barcelona City Council for years. Ullar highlighted their system, which uses a suspended net triggered by an app, as “more effective and less damaging for the wild boars” than current methods.

The Catalan Government’s Rural Agents Corps leads the current operation. Some Civil Guard agents also participate in the device. Their strategy aims to minimise the wild boar population. This prevents African Swine Fever (ASF) from spreading beyond a controlled perimeter. The operation primarily uses three capture methods. These include Pig Brig trap enclosures, typical individual cage traps, and night patrols. During patrols, agents use silenced shotguns. Drones equipped with thermal cameras assist in detecting wild boar presence. These drones are crucial for locating animals efficiently in the dense Collserola terrain.

Companies Offer Advanced Capture Methods

Hunters, who previously operated outside the core perimeter, have ceased their involvement in adjacent areas. The Catalan Government is considering extending the hunting season. However, hunting groups are currently unwilling to continue without financial incentives. These groups never operated in the “zero zone.” This was due to the risk of dogs dispersing animals beyond the established containment area.

Estrateko’s method involves placing a suspended net over bait for several days. This allows for quick capture once a group of animals gathers. Ullar explained that their system is “much faster and cleaner” compared to Pig Brig enclosures. These American-made enclosures require several days for wild boars to become accustomed to them. He also asserted that animals suffer less with their method.

Proven Success in Barcelona

Local companies like Estrateko and Astrovet have operated in various Catalan municipalities for years. They prevent wild boars from entering urban areas, mitigating risks to residents and property. Barcelona City Council did not renew Estrateko’s contract after the African Swine Fever outbreak declaration. Ullar emphasised their proven expertise. He stated, “We have demonstrated a very high degree of experience and skill; the results in Collserola are successful.” He recalled capturing up to eight wild boars every night in Barcelona. This contributed to a significant 70% reduction in incidents caused by the animals over recent years. Such incidents include traffic accidents and damage to gardens.

Other specialised wildlife management companies consulted by El Periódico share Estrateko’s view. They advocate for their inclusion in the ongoing operation. The Catalan Government aims to virtually eradicate wild boars in Collserola. However, hundreds of animals remain. They pose a continued risk for virus propagation. The Bellaterra area, where the first positive cases were found, now shows almost no wild boar presence.

Future of Wild Boar Management

The ongoing challenge of African Swine Fever containment in Collserola highlights the need for comprehensive and effective strategies. Integrating experienced local companies could offer additional tools and expertise. This would support the Catalan Government’s efforts in managing the wild boar population and safeguarding public health.
