The Colonia Güell modernist festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this weekend with historical recreations and pyrotechnic displays. From October 16-18, the former industrial textile colony in Santa Coloma de Cervelló will host its annual historical recreation event. This festival revives early 20th-century life through theatrical spaces, musical performances, and period costumes. Approximately 200 volunteer residents participate each year, according to event organisers. They wear authentic worker clothing including skirts, blouses and aprons from the period.

Festival Programme
The only modernist festival in Baix Llobregat features 25 thematic scenes this anniversary edition. These scenes represent social life, trades, local events and period customs. Key installations include ‘A Ca l’Espinal Festa Grossa! Casament!’ and ‘Les Bugaderes fan safareig’. New activities mark the quarter-century milestone. These include an exhibition documenting the event’s 25-year history and a children’s magic performance. Additionally, organisers have scheduled a Gaudí workshop and special pyrotechnic show.

The festival occurs at the Colonia Güell complex, which contains the renowned Gaudí Crypt. This UNESCO World Heritage site provides the backdrop for opening ceremonies. Santa Coloma de Cervelló’s mayor will lead the presentation alongside festival organisers. Following opening speeches, musical group Nuus will perform. Then Drac i Diables de la Colonia Güell will present a unique pyrotechnic spectacle. Weekend activities include choral performances and traditional dances alongside the dramatised recreations.
Cultural Significance
This event highlights Barcelona’s rich modernist heritage while supporting local cultural preservation. The festival aligns with broader efforts to maintain Catalonia’s architectural legacy. According to cultural officials, such events help sustain community engagement with historical sites. The Colonia Güell complex represents one of Gaudí’s most significant works outside Barcelona proper. Its crypt showcases his innovative architectural techniques that later influenced the Sagrada Família.
The celebration concludes on Sunday October 26 with a theatrical work dedicated to colony workers’ lives. This final performance encapsulates the festival’s mission to honour the site’s industrial heritage. Meanwhile, Barcelona continues to develop its cultural programming through various initiatives. Recent events include the 85th anniversary commemoration of Lluís Companys and architectural innovations at Piscina Barcelona 2025.
