Residents of the Congrés i els Indians neighbourhood in Barcelona have celebrated a significant victory this February. The local metro station on the L5 line has officially adopted a new name. The stop, formerly known simply as Congrés, has been renamed Congrés-Indians. This change better reflects the dual identity of the surrounding area.

The name change was ratified last weekend. It results from a long-standing campaign by local residents. The modification had been on the agenda of the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) since 2022. This forms part of a broader initiative to align transport infrastructure names with the social and historical reality of their locations. Signage across the station’s access points has already been updated to display the new moniker.

Congrés-Indians Metro Station: A Tale of Two Neighbourhoods

The renaming is more than a cosmetic update. It acknowledges the two distinct historical roots of the neighbourhood. The area comprises housing blocks constructed during the dictatorship to accommodate the 35th Eucharistic Congress in 1952. Meanwhile, it also includes the older ‘Barri dels Indians’.

The latter was developed by ‘Indians’. This term historically describes Catalans who emigrated to the Americas, made their fortune, and returned to build grand towers and homes, particularly near Passeig de Maragall. By hyphenating the station name, the transport network now explicitly recognises both historical legacies that define the district.

Congrés-Indians Metro Station: From Garcilaso to Congrés-Indians

This is not the first time the station’s identity has been a subject of discussion. According to archives from Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the original plans for the infrastructure proposed the name Garcilaso. This was due to its location at the intersection of Carrer de Garcilaso and Carrer de Puerto Príncipe. However, that proposal was discarded before the station opened.

When the station finally entered service in 1959 as part of Line II, it was christened Viviendas del Congreso. This name referenced the developing housing estate initiated by Bishop Gregorio Modrego. Following the extension of Line V (now L5) in 1970 and the subsequent standardisation of lines in 1982, the name was Catalanised to Congrés.

The official renaming ceremony was attended by Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and Sant Andreu District Councillor Marta Villanueva. Therefore, it marked the culmination of the neighbourhood’s request for recognition.
