Spanish Congress extends its Pegasus spyware investigation commission to examine surveillance of Catalan independence figures.

This parliamentary committee will now enter a second phase focused specifically on the use of Pegasus software against politicians, activists and lawyers.
The extension received support from deputies across multiple parties including PSOE, Junts, ERC, Sumar, Podem and EH Bildu. Consequently, the commission will continue hearings and document collection regarding what some politicians term ‘Operation Catalunya bis’.
Pegasus Spyware Investigation Enters Critical Second Phase
Junts deputy Josep Pagès emphasized the importance of continuing the work to expose what he described as ‘dirty war’ tactics against Catalan independence supporters. Furthermore, he detailed that this second phase aims to clarify multiple interconnected cases.
The commission plans to summon additional witnesses including Eugenio Pereiro, the former head of the general information commission. Additionally, ERC defended keeping the commission active, arguing public resources were improperly used against political opponents.
This parliamentary investigation initially launched one year ago will now specifically address the Catalangate revelations. Meanwhile, deputies seek to document the full extent of surveillance operations against Catalan civil society figures.
