The Guardia Urbana de Barcelona is investigating three individuals following a failed smuggling attempt in the Sant Andreu district. Consequently, the suspects abandoned a van loaded with thousands of packets of contraband tobacco upon spotting a police checkpoint. In their panic, they left behind crucial evidence that led directly to their identification.

A Hasty Escape in Bon Pastor

The incident occurred on Monday in the Bon Pastor neighbourhood. Officers from the Guardia Urbana were conducting a routine vehicle control operation. According to police sources, a van approaching the checkpoint suddenly halted when the occupants noticed the police presence.

Realising they could not bypass the inspection, the three occupants exited the vehicle. They then fled the scene on foot, abandoning the van and its cargo in the middle of the road. Officers approached the vehicle, suspicious of the abrupt abandonment, and proceeded to search the interior.

Documents and Contraband Tobacco Left Behind

Upon inspection, police discovered 2,000 packets of foreign tobacco. The merchandise lacked the required tax stamps, confirming it was illicit contraband tobacco. However, the most significant find for investigators was not the cargo, but what the suspects had forgotten in their panic.

During a thorough search of the cabin, officers found identification documents belonging to the three individuals who had fled. This discovery allowed the police to immediately confirm the identities of the alleged smugglers. While the Guardia Urbana has not released specific details regarding the suspects’ ages or nationalities, they are now formally under investigation.

Seizure Handed to Civil Guard

No receipts or documentation justifying the possession of the tobacco were found in the vehicle. Given the lack of tax stamps and proof of legal purchase, the entire shipment was seized.

The confiscated packages have been placed at the disposal of the Guardia Civil. This force is primarily responsible for fiscal and borders investigations in Spain. Therefore, this seizure highlights Barcelona’s continuing struggle as a significant entry point for illicit goods entering the European market.
