The MSC Splendida, carrying 5,733 passengers and crew, diverted course to assist the small vessel approximately 20 miles south of the Balearic Islands after authorities alerted them to the emergency situation.
The rescue occurred in challenging conditions with strong northeastern winds and waves reaching up to three meters. Captain Giuseppe Maresca and his crew successfully brought aboard 17 adults and two children, all reportedly from Algeria according to police sources. The migrants received immediate care including food, clothing, and sleeping accommodations for the journey to Barcelona.

Upon arriving at Barcelona port at 6:30 AM on Monday, medical teams including Red Cross personnel assessed all migrants. Three required hospital transfer: a child with fever from water exposure during rescue, the child’s father with injuries from assisting him, and an adult with diabetes. National Police are now handling identification procedures and will process the migrants according to immigration law at the La Verneda police complex.
This incident marks the second similar rescue by an MSC vessel in recent years. Furthermore, according to recent security reports, migration patterns continue to evolve in the Mediterranean region. The rescued boat was one of four vessels attempting to reach the Balearic Islands on Sunday, with approximately 70 people total making the journey according to Balearic government delegation data.
Statistics reveal the scale of maritime migration to the archipelago, with 340 boats carrying 6,270 migrants arriving in the Balearic Islands so far this year. This represents a significant increase from the 5,882 migrants who arrived by sea during all of 2024, based on Interior Ministry figures. The recent severe weather conditions in the Mediterranean have made such journeys particularly perilous for those attempting the crossing.
International maritime law requires all vessels to assist those in danger at sea, a principle the MSC crew followed precisely. The cruise ship continued its scheduled route to Barcelona after completing the rescue operation, demonstrating how commercial and humanitarian missions can successfully coexist in modern maritime operations.
