A cyclist has been rescued in Gavà after a branch pierced his thigh during a serious trail crash. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, resulting in the man being airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.
Complex rescue operation for cyclist in Gavà
The incident took place around 9:00 am on Sunday, 15 February. The victim, a man aged approximately 50, was descending a trail near the Ca n’Amat farmhouse when he lost control. Consequently, he struck a tree at speed. During the collision, a branch impaled his leg, causing a serious perforation wound.

Emergency services were alerted immediately. Therefore, the Catalan Fire Service (Bombers de la Generalitat) dispatched two ground crews from the Gavà station.
Recognising the severity of the injury and the inaccessibility of the site, rescuers mobilised a helicopter from the Special Actions Support Group (GRAE). This helicopter was accompanied by a doctor from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM).
Cyclist airlifted to Bellvitge
Once the air unit located the injured man, the medical team worked to stabilise his condition on the hillside. Following initial treatment, he was hoisted into the helicopter. Subsequently, he was flown directly to the Bellvitge University Hospital in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat for urgent surgical care.
Busy day for rescue teams
Meanwhile, the operation in Gavà was not the only significant intervention for the Fire Service on Sunday. Crews were also deployed to the Vall de Cardós in the Pyrenees to assist a skier affected by an avalanche.
While the skier avoided being fully buried by the snow, he sustained injuries. These injuries prevented him from leaving the area unaided. His companions were unable to assist him down the mountain. As a result, a second rescue operation was necessary to bring him to safety, similar to a recent complex rescue operation in Sant Cugat.
