DANA Alice has caused severe transport disruptions across eastern Spain today, with Renfe suspending all train departures originating from Barcelona and Valencia stations due to extreme weather conditions. The meteorological phenomenon, which struck on Monday morning, has led to widespread flooding and multiple road closures throughout Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Meanwhile, emergency services remain on high alert as the storm continues to batter coastal regions with unprecedented rainfall levels.

However, the situation in Tarragona has become particularly critical. Consequently, seven major roads have been closed, including the AP-7 motorway between Freginals and Ulldecona in both directions. Furthermore, the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated red alerts for the Ebro delta area, warning of potential 90mm rainfall accumulations within one hour and 180mm over twelve hours.
Moreover, Civil Protection authorities have declared a state of emergency across five Catalan regions. Additionally, they’ve described the situation in Montsià as “extremely complicated” with numerous rescue operations underway. Therefore, residents are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors where possible.
Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, DANA Alice has already caused significant damage. Specifically, Ibiza recorded 183 litres per square metre, leading to dramatic flood rescues including one person trapped inside their vehicle. Although AEMET has now deactivated warnings in the Balearics, orange alerts remain active across Valencia’s coastline, northern Castellón and Tarragona.
Furthermore, numerous Valencian municipalities have taken precautionary measures by cancelling school classes for Monday. Similarly, in Murcia, despite decreased overflow risks, local authorities have requested catastrophic zone status following substantial rainfall. The mayor of San Javier has formally petitioned for special assistance to deal with the aftermath.
Consequently, transport authorities are urging passengers to check service updates regularly through official Renfe channels before travelling. Additionally, the Catalan Traffic Service provides real-time road condition updates via their official website. For those affected by the severe DANA Alice disruptions, emergency protocols remain activated across all affected regions.
Looking ahead, meteorological experts from AEMET predict the storm system will gradually weaken throughout Monday afternoon. Nevertheless, authorities maintain that extreme caution should be exercised, particularly in coastal areas and near river basins. The final impact assessment will only be possible once waters recede and full damage inspections can be conducted.
