The song will officially debut to the public on March 26, 2026, at the ‘Festa dels 100 Dies’ event, marking the 100-day countdown to the race. The band will perform the track live for the first time during a free concert on Passeig de Lluís Companys, an iconic city promenade.
The Soundtrack to a Historic Event
Barcelona City Council’s selection of Doctor Prats, a band known for their energetic blend of pop, cumbia, reggae, and ska, reflects a deliberate strategy to create an anthem that resonates with the city’s vibrant character. Officials have expressed their hope that the song will not only capture the spirit of the Grand Départ but also become, as reported by Tot Barcelona, “one of the great hits of summer 2026.”
The Grand Départ Barcelona 2026, scheduled for July 4-6, will see the world’s most famous cycling race begin with three stages across Catalonia. This marks a significant moment for Barcelona, placing it on a global stage as it hosts one of sport’s most-watched annual events.
A Festive Anthem for a Global Audience
Both the band and the council state the song is festive and accessible, aiming to connect with a broad audience from the first listen. Its lyrics will evoke the essence of cycling: constant movement, collective effort, and the passion of roadside spectators. It will also paint a picture of a “Mediterranean, luminous, and open” Barcelona.
Giving fans a taste of what’s to come, Doctor Prats recently shared a snippet of the track on social media, featuring the line, “Energia, per recórrer carreteres infinites” (“Energy, to travel infinite roads”), set to a vibrant and infectious rhythm.
‘Energy, Optimism, and Collective Spirit’
David Escudé, the city’s Councillor for Sports, championed this decision. He explained that the council sought a song “capable of connecting with the collective energy and enthusiasm” palpable in the city ahead of the Tour’s arrival.
“We have chosen Doctor Prats, a group that fits perfectly with the festive, transversal, and open spirit that defines Barcelona,” Escudé stated, as reported by betevé.
The band has embraced the commission, calling it “an honour” to provide the music for an international event that will showcase Barcelona to the world. Marc Riera, the band’s frontman, elaborated on their artistic vision for the song.
“It aims to spread energy, optimism, and collective spirit,” Riera said. “We want it sung and danced in the streets, accompanying the public beyond this great sporting event.”
Fusing Catalan Culture with International Sport
The city’s selection of a prominent Catalan-language band underscores its commitment to showcasing local culture during major international events, a strategy also evident in preparations for the Goya Awards in 2026. This move aligns with a broader push for cultural representation, such as the recently introduced 25% Catalan music quota for radio stations, bolstering the region’s vibrant music scene.
As the countdown begins, all eyes-and ears-will be on Passeig de Lluís Companys on March 26, when Barcelona finally reveals the official anthem for its grand cycling summer.
