The Mossos d’Esquadra received multiple alerts around 00:30. Witnesses reported a car on the third lane of the motorway. It was heading towards Barcelona instead of France. This posed a grave risk of head-on collisions.

According to ElCaso.com, the man explained he became disoriented. He had travelled from Benidorm. He turned around at the El Voló toll after crossing the border. He then began driving in the wrong direction.

Mossos d’Esquadra Intervene

Mossos d’Esquadra officers from the Traffic Area and Regional Operational Resources Area (ARRO) quickly set up a device. They were initially conducting prevention duties against trailer robberies. Officers successfully stopped the vehicle at kilometre 30. This location is near exit 4, Figueres Sud, within the municipality of Borrassà.

Driver’s Condition and Tests

Officers conducted mandatory alcohol and drug tests. Both tests returned negative results. Medical services from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) attended the man. They confirmed he was well, despite initial concerns about disorientation due to illness.

AP-7 Motorway Importance

The AP-7 is a critical motorway. It connects Barcelona with the French border. It serves as a major route for both residents and tourists. The Baix Empordà area in Girona is a popular destination. It sees significant traffic, especially at night. This incident therefore caused widespread concern.

Authorities charged the man with reckless driving. An investigation is now underway. This aims to clarify all facts surrounding the dangerous incident and prevent future occurrences.
