A serious collision in Barcelona has left a van driver fighting for his life after his vehicle struck a tram on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred on Avenida Diagonal, near Calle Espronceda in the Sant Martí district. Emergency services rushed to the scene, with multiple units of the Guardia Urbana and Barcelona Fire Brigade deployed. Three ambulances from the Servei d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) were also mobilised.
According to municipal sources, the injured driver was stabilised on-site before being evacuated by ambulance to Hospital del Mar. Authorities confirmed his condition as critical.
The crash caused visible damage to the front of the tram. The impact was so forceful that it dragged the van off the road, wedging it between a lamppost and a traffic light on the central promenade of the Diagonal.
A police investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision.
