Police in the Barcelona area used drones to catch a 29-year-old man breaking into cars near the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya during the Gran Premi de Catalunya de MotoGP on Sunday, 17 May.
Officers from the Mossos d'Esquadra Unitat de Drons spotted the suspect at about 13:00 as he broke into vehicles parked in a field next to the circuit in Montmeló, Barcelona. Police said they had deployed a security operation to prevent crime during the event.
The drones tracked the man as he smashed car windows and reached inside to steal valuables. Patrols and motor units moved in, and officers intercepted him as he tried to leave in his car. He was detained after a short chase.
Police said they found several stolen items and tools inside the vehicle. These included black gloves on the passenger seat, which they believe were used to avoid fingerprints, and a metal drill bit, which may have been used to break the windows. Officers also recovered backpacks, suitcases and electronic devices.
After the arrest, officers checked the area and found four vehicles with broken windows. The man was charged with four counts of aggravated theft from inside vehicles. He spent the night in a police station before appearing before the duty investigating court in Granollers.
