Catalonia is preparing to deepen its ties with Latin America through a dedicated regional strategy. The announcement came on Tuesday from Jaume Duch, the Generalitat’s minister for European Union and External Action, who unveiled the plan at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Speaking at the event ‘Democracy and Resilient Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: The role of the private sector’, organised by the Council of Ibero-American Business Alliance (Ceapi) and the UN Development Programme, Duch said: ‘We expect to approve, in the first half of next year, an action strategy for collaboration across the Latin American continent.’
He underlined the importance of forging new avenues of cooperation, particularly public-private partnerships. Catalonia already has hundreds of companies operating in Latin America, Duch noted, but argued that there is scope for much greater involvement in tackling pressing social, environmental and economic challenges.
During his visit, Duch held talks with Marcos Athias Neto, the UN’s Assistant Secretary-General and head of the UNDP’s policy and programme support office. He also scheduled meetings with several leaders from the region, including Dominican president Luis Abinader, Uruguay’s president Yamandú Orsi, and Paola Bauche Petersen, Secretary for Environment and Territorial Development in Jalisco, Mexico.
Duch also took part in ‘i2CAT: Living Labs for Human Rights’, a side event organised by the Catalan government’s delegation in the United States and Canada alongside the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD). The initiative, developed in partnership with Senegal’s FDSUT telecoms fund, showcased innovation projects aimed at sustainable and inclusive development.
The upcoming strategy, aligned with both Spanish and EU priorities, reflects Catalonia’s ambition to expand its international role while leveraging economic, environmental and cultural synergies with Latin America.
