European Investment Bank funds are set to transform Barcelona’s Rodalies commuter network.

The EIB and Renfe have signed a landmark €250 million loan, the first tranche of a total €500 million financing package approved to modernise and expand the fleet serving Catalonia.

This substantial investment will finance the purchase of 101 new electric trains.

Consequently, these modern units will replace the current series that entered service in 1990 and is now at the end of its operational life. The move aims to significantly enhance service reliability and reduce technical incidents.

How The Rodalies Modernisation Will Boost Capacity

The new trains promise a major leap in passenger capacity. They will increase from the current approximate capacity of 830 people per train to between 900 and 1,800 people on the new models. Furthermore, the distribution of the 101 trains is strategically planned.

Of the total, 69 will be high-capacity units dedicated to suburban services in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the remaining 32 will cover medium-distance and regional routes. This allocation directly addresses growing demand across the network.

Accessibility and safety are also key priorities. The new carriages will be more accessible for passengers with reduced mobility. Additionally, they will be equipped with the European standard ERMTS (European Rail Management Traffic System), which improves interoperability, efficiency, and operational safety.

This infrastructure investment comes amid broader discussions on Barcelona’s transport future. The city continues to balance modernisation with safety, as seen in recent tragic incidents on its roads. Therefore, reliable public transport remains a critical component of urban mobility.

The loan agreement, detailed on the European Investment Bank’s official website, represents a long-term commitment to Catalonia’s rail infrastructure. It aligns with wider regional economic strategies, including efforts to manage growth as Catalonia’s export economy strengthens.

Ultimately, the Rodalies modernisation project is a pivotal step. It promises a more reliable, capacious, and sustainable commuter rail service for the Barcelona metropolitan area for decades to come.
