The Colla Castellera de l'Esquerra de l'Eixample, known as the Esquerdats, achieved their best-ever performance on Sunday during the Spring Festival. They successfully built a '5 de 7' human tower in Barcelona's Esquerra de l'Eixample district. This marked a significant milestone for the group. They also recovered a challenging '4 de 7 amb agulla' tower.
Record-Breaking Human Tower Feats
The Esquerdats completed their third '5 de 7' tower. This complex structure has five people per level and seven levels high. Additionally, they successfully dismantled a '4 de 7 amb agulla'. This tower has four people per level, seven levels high, and a central pillar. This recovery came after nearly a year without performing the '4 de 7 amb agulla'. It marks their eighth such tower. The group also built a '3 de 7 amb agulla' and a 'pilar de 5'. According to a statement, the Esquerdats performed these feats during the Spring Festival. This event was organised as part of the main neighbourhood festival in the Esquerra de l'Eixample district.
Community Celebration and Preparations
The Castellers de Mollet and the Colla Jove de Castellers de Sitges joined the Esquerdats for the main event. The previous day, Saturday, saw the group hold a vigils day for the first time. During this practice session, they built similar human towers but with one fewer level. These included a '5 de 6', a '3 de 6 amb agulla', and a '4 de 6 amb agulla'. The Castellers del Prat participated in Saturday's event. This celebration took place next to a new mural. The Esquerdats painted it on a wall surrounding the former Modelo prison.
Group History and Future Ambitions
The Colla Castellera de l'Esquerra de l'Eixample organises four human tower days annually. These events occur twice in May, once in June, and again in October. The group formed in 2018. Their goal was creating a stronger, more cohesive neighbourhood network through their shared passion for human towers. A year later, the Esquerdats joined the Coordinator of Catalan Human Tower Groups (CCCC). For their upcoming anniversary event in June, the group plans to surpass their recent achievement. They aim for a new, more complex human tower. This continuous effort strengthens local cultural traditions and community bonds in Barcelona.
