Cyclists are rallying this Sunday to demand safer streets in Barcelona’s Eixample district. The Bicicletada event on 12 October will kick off from Avinguda Roma itself, putting a spotlight on the need for traffic calming along this busy avenue.

The Bicicle Club de Catalunya (BACC) says the eleventh edition will focus on transforming Avinguda Roma with proper cycling infrastructure. Meanwhile, organisers want the city to expand bike lanes across Esquerra de l’Eixample and connect existing routes properly.
Specifically, cyclists are calling for a complete redesign of the avenue that genuinely calms traffic and gives more space to people rather than cars. The BACC also wants long-delayed bike lanes on Viladomat and Villarroel streets finally built, plus an expansion of the Diputació bidirectional lane near the Arenas shopping centre.
Other demands include finishing missing sections on Carrer Mallorca, particularly near the Estel building and opposite Escola Auró. However, protesters say the city should remove car lanes to create continuous, safe cycling routes that improve safety around schools.
The city council already has plans for Avinguda Roma. Barcelona announced works starting in 2026 for the stretch between Viladomat and Calàbria streets, creating a new plaza near the Estel building. This first phase should finish by spring 2027 at a cost of 4.5 million euros, with more sections to follow.
