The Eixample district has started a €2 million project to transform Plaça de Pablo Neruda in Barcelona's Sagrada Família neighbourhood. This initiative aims to create a vibrant community space for all ages, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2027.
The Barcelona City Council project directly addresses current deficiencies in the square. It will replace the sunken, enclosed skating rink with a new pump track and training area. The plan also includes more play areas and shaded zones.
This transformation is a direct result of extensive citizen participation. Residents from the Fort Pienc and Sagrada Família neighbourhoods contributed their ideas. School directors, parent associations (AFAs), children, and the local skating community also participated in the design process.
New Features for Community Use
The square sits at the intersection of Carrer d'Aragó, Carrer de Marina, Carrer de Lepant, and Avinguda Diagonal. This central location makes its revitalisation important for local residents. The current design lacks sufficient play options and comfortable socialisation spaces.
The new design proposes integrating a new pump track circuit into the central space. This area will also serve as a play and training space for skating, hockey, and other sports. Officials expect this will attract new children and families to the square.
Additionally, the new recreational area will include various games for children of different ages. These features include a climbing wall, a blackboard, games painted on the ground, and a ping-pong table. This creates a welcoming space that encourages socialisation among accompanying adults.
Enhancing Green Spaces and Accessibility
The intervention seeks to create a unified image for the square. It also aims to improve access points, design inclusive and safe spaces, and establish an accessible route throughout. To improve neighbourhood services and foster community life, the project plans to install power outlets for events and celebrations.
New trees and fabric structures will provide more shade, enhancing comfort and safety. The design differentiates benches for various user groups. Regarding the green areas, the project will reduce erosion and stabilise existing flowerbeds and slopes. It will also redesign green zones to help regulate and mitigate surrounding road traffic.
Improvements will also affect the vegetation and tree conditions. Where shrub vegetation in flowerbeds does not reduce visibility, the plan incorporates diverse Mediterranean species. Additionally, the project includes upgrades to urban furniture and lighting.
Part of Broader Urban Plan
The Eixample district, home to over 260,000 residents, is one of Barcelona's most populous areas. This project forms part of the Sagrada Família High-Traffic Area Action Plan. This broader plan seeks to recover public spaces for local neighbourhood and community activities.
The approximately €2 million investment reflects the Barcelona City Council's commitment to improving urban quality. The transformation of Plaça de Pablo Neruda will provide a modern, functional, and green space for everyone. Residents can look forward to a revitalised community hub by early 2027.
