Barcelona's El Clot metro station, serving lines L1 and L2, completed its extensive accessibility upgrade this Wednesday, 22 May, after two years and four months of construction. The €8 million project now allows people with reduced mobility to transfer smoothly between the red and purple lines. This marks a significant improvement for daily commuters and visitors alike.
Enhanced Mobility for Passengers
The works introduced two new lifts connecting the L1 and L2 platforms, eliminating a significant detour for many passengers. Previously, users faced considerable challenges accessing the underground, especially due to the closure of the entrance at the start of Rambla Guipúzcoa near Meridiana. This meant longer routes and difficulties for those with specific mobility needs. Now, users with prams, shopping trolleys, or luggage can easily navigate the station. The L1 section became accessible last autumn, reopening that key entrance.
Sílvia Paneque, Minister for Territory, highlighted the broader commitment. She stated, "The investment we will allocate to adapt all stations in the network exceeds €100 million." This specific project at El Clot received co-financing from the European Next Generation fund, showing its importance.
Extensive Station Upgrades
The full adaptation of El Clot station involved installing five lifts and reconfiguring connections between different levels. These changes ensure a more direct and convenient path for all passengers moving through the station. Additionally, authorities expanded the L1 vestibule area, providing more space for waiting and circulation. They also widened platforms, an essential upgrade given the increasing number of public transport users in Barcelona. These improvements aim to enhance safety and comfort for everyone.
Currently, a temporary detour affects some users near the station. This is due to ongoing repairs on a large pergola located over the central promenade of Rambla Guipúzcoa, at the height of Carrer del Clot. However, the metro station's core accessibility features are now fully operational, providing long-term benefits.
Catalonia's Accessibility Commitment
The Generalitat has made substantial progress in metro accessibility across Catalonia. They have adapted 157 of the 163 stations across the network, representing 96.3% of the total. This commitment reflects a regional strategy to create a more inclusive public transport system. The ongoing investment aims to ensure that all residents can use the metro network independently.
Looking ahead, the Ministry for Territory is also working to ensure accessibility for interurban bus stations and the buses themselves across Catalonia. For the metro, adaptation works continue at Verdaguer station (L4) and Plaça de Sants station (L5). Furthermore, projects to adapt access points for Urquinaona station, serving both L1 and L4, are still in the planning stages. These future developments will further expand accessible transport options throughout the city and region.
