Spain's airport operator Aena has unveiled detailed plans for a €3.4 billion expansion of Barcelona-El Prat airport, including a new third terminal that would increase the facility's capacity from 55 million to 90 million passengers annually.
The proposal, presented to the Catalan government and Barcelona city council, includes a satellite terminal connected to the existing T1 by an automated train, expansion of the runway system, and new transport links including a direct rail connection to Barcelona-Sants station.
Environmental backlash
Environmental organisations have condemned the plan. Ecologistes en Acció described it as "incompatible with Spain's climate commitments" and called for investment in high-speed rail alternatives instead.
The expansion would require construction on protected wetlands adjacent to the Llobregat delta, one of the most important bird habitats in the western Mediterranean.
Political divisions
The plan has also exposed political tensions. El Prat de Llobregat mayor Alba Bou accused Aena of excluding her municipality from discussions despite the airport being located entirely within its boundaries.
