El Prat poultry fair has received official authorisation to showcase live birds this weekend, overcoming strict avian flu restrictions that threatened one of the event’s main attractions.

The Generalitat of Catalonia granted permission on Monday morning following comprehensive testing of all birds, allowing the display of traditional ‘pota blava’ breed chickens and roosters at the 52nd edition of the Fira Avícola.

Mayor Alba Bou expressed relief that all test results returned negative, enabling the winter fair to proceed with its signature feature intact.

“We celebrate that El Prat’s winter festival won’t be diminished and that all visitors can enjoy every element of the fair and its authentic protagonists,” she stated during the event presentation. The approval came with specific conditions, including housing the birds in a covered enclosure to minimise health risks.

Organisers expect approximately 80,000 visitors to attend the festival, which spans 32,000 square metres around La Ricarda farm. The historic farm building itself holds architectural significance within the city’s catalogue. Furthermore, this year marks the first time the event has earned the Biosphere sustainability certification, recognising its commitment to sustainable tourism practices through initiatives supported by Barcelona’s tourism consortium.

New features for 2025 include a Cooking Classroom and Tasting Classroom, where renowned Catalan chefs will demonstrate recipes using local ‘pota blava’ chicken and Prat artichokes. Additionally, the commercial pavilion will host nearly 100 local businesses and associations, while sports activities and family games will run throughout the weekend. Visitors can purchase chickens at €23.50 each and capons at €34.50, representing a slight increase from last year’s prices.

The successful authorisation demonstrates how traditional events can adapt to modern health requirements while maintaining their cultural essence. Meanwhile, other local initiatives continue to enhance Barcelona’s cultural offerings, including recent efforts to revive traditional Catalan cuisine across the region. The El Prat poultry fair therefore represents an important milestone for community events navigating contemporary challenges.
